Bishop Luis R. Zarama
Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh
Bishop Luis Zarama was born in Pasto, Colombia, and earned degrees in Philosophy, Theology, and Canon Law before teaching for 11 years at several Colombian schools.
He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1993, serving in parish ministry, vocations work, and later as the first Hispanic pastor in the archdiocese. He went on to serve as Vicar General, Judicial Vicar, and was named a monsignor in 2007.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta, where he continued his leadership as Vicar General and Judicial Vicar. He also served on the Santa Marta Group, an international task force against human trafficking established by Pope Francis.
Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh on July 5, 2017, and he was installed on August 29, 2017, at the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral.
