Meet The Cristo Rey Board

James W. “Jim” Dean Jr.

My career has been at the intersection of academics and business. My degrees are in psychology (Catholic University, BA 1978) and organizational behavior (Carnegie Mellon University, MS 1980 and PhD 1983).

I have held teaching positions in the business schools at Penn State, University of Cincinnati, and UNC Chapel Hill. I started the leadership phase of my career at UNC, where I was associate dean and dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School, and then provost of the university. My last role before my recent retirement was as president of the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

One of my most formative experiences was as a volunteer for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (since renamed), where I developed skills in organizational assessment and enhancement.

I have been on a number of boards over my career. Most of them have been financially-oriented, overseeing endowment investments at UNC and UNH. As UNC provost I was an ex officio member of a board overseeing Research Triangle Park. I also served on several boards at the various churches I have attended, both pastoral and financial in nature.
